Lecture 11, 12 and 13 - Summary of Lecture

In the past 3 weeks we didn't have a reading to complete during the week but instead we focused on working on our assignments. This assignment consisted of designing a metaphor poster. We had to find different metaphors that are used within design by different designers and write about them.

Lecture 10...Reading 7....Response

Abstract

I really enjoyed reading this thesis. I could understand the different concepts the author was speaking about and I loved how he related it to the Simpson's since it is such a widely recognised television cartoon. I could relate to the different themes and understand the connection between the characters and post-modernism.

This was an extremely long reading and I think I would have understood it better if I didn't rush through it. It had a few words and phrases I didn't completely understand but that will hopefully get cleared up.

- Postmodernism is a term used to encompass a wide range of attitudes in the fields of aesthetic production and cultural criticism emerging in the 1980s.

- Art, music, dance, film, theatre, philosophy, criticism, historiography, theology and culture are all different forms of modernism.

- Postmodernism aims to deconstruct or rewrite modernism in order to open it's closed systems.

- Postmodernism has reacted to the authoritarian hiearchization of culture by subverting conventions, blurring previously distinct boundaries and rejecting traditional aesthetic values.

- "More real than the real" - This relates specifically to the hyper-reality of situations. For example Disneyland. It differs between the theme park and the country of America.

- He described postmodernism as a cultural dominant driven primarily by the forces of consumer multinational capitalism.

- Simpson's is a TV program dedicated to portraying contemporary society in all it's multifaceted glory. 

- Manages to reflect the pluralism of postmodern society in a parodying yet symbolic manner. Does not limit it's subject matter to particular age groups, ethnicity or social classes. It merge all of the society together to form the chaotic and diversified town. 

- The Simpson's are very historically and politically based. Whenever a situation arises in the real world. The cartoon will create an episode based solely around this. For example terrorist attacks, presidential elections and/or celebrities/iconic figures passing away.

- The cartoon uses dim lighting and dull colours to portray the 1950s period in time. It is supposed to recognise the differences between the 50's and us in the present.

- The thesis talks about Homer (the father figure in the Simpson's) and his attachment to technology. He is beyond obsessed with the television and this portrays some people in the real world who are lazy and attached to objects. It 'makes fun of' these kinds of people and makes you realise that they have a problem. The TV series doesn't promote exercise or 'health' in any way. It shows Homer pigging out on junk food especially his love for doughnuts at work.

- This can either give off a positive or negative connotation towards the viewers. Many parents don't let their children watch the Simpson's because of this. But watching the Simpson's as a 10 year old and then watching it as a 20 year old you realise a huge change and you begin to watch the cartoon from a different point of view. You start to understand the political and historical side more and it actually becomes an education source not so much a comical cartoon. 

- I personally found it extremely interesting as to the comment about the Simpson's being shown in the 1998 Time Magazine. This is a great achievement and very surprising.

- The Simpson's are a pop culture icon of it's own, the cartoon is very influential and so are the meanings behind the scenes.   

VOCABULARY 

- Intertextuality: The text within the text. Eg. Parody and Pastiche
- Hyperreality: Inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality
- Metanarratives: Abstract idea that is thought to be a comprehensive explanation of historical experience of knowledge
- Pastiche: Work of art that combines themes and styles from various sources in such a way as to appear obviously derivative.
- Fragmentation: Absense or the underdevelopment of connections between the society and the groupings of some members of that society on the lines of common culture.

Today in class we spoke about the previous weeks reading.  I'm really liking the readings so far because I'm learning a lot and my vocabulary is getting more broad.
We also completed more on our assignment (metaphor poster).

Lecture 9....Notes

I was currently absent from class today as I had a doctors appointment. I received the reading for this week from Belinda. I have completely the reading and put notes up for it under the heading (week 10). I currently do not have notes for this lesson as I was away but from what I was told you spoke about week 8's reading (which I already went through with you in class in week 8) and you did more of the metaphor assignment (which I also went through with you in week 8).

- Such a tactic sells a kind of pseudo-individuality, which the Frankfurt School theorists defined as a feature of the products of the culture industry in which a fast sense of individuality is sold simultaneously to many people.

Lecture 7...Reading 5....Response

The Conceptual Image

- Ideas and concepts are not just narrative information
- Armando Testa (1917-1992) - Italian, abstract painter then graphic designer
- Primary = the image
- Secondary = short sentence or one word in advertisements.
- Poster art emerged because of the destroyed city of Poland, this was a monumental tribute.
- Posters for cultural events, the circus, politics and movies are very important ways of communicating the message
- Collage:
                 - started with a more menacing and surreal communication and posters in posters and experimental animated films.
                 - Flowing, stylized contour lines.
- Main mediums - acrylics, crayon, pencil and watercolour
- 1000 posters were created by Swierzy
- Logo becomes a main symbol
- Illustration coming to a close due to other mediums
- Photography is starting to take over
- Six million copies of posters were produced
- Geometric forms and abstract signs were also produced by Glaser in the 1980s and 1990s
- Barry Zaid - Architecture and self taught graphic designer
- Painting and Colonial American art was produced by Paul Davis
- Richard Hess was inspired by Paul Davis
- Designers and artists used a bunch of mediums to produce their concepts and ideas
- Political Monuments - posters were a very popular form of medium during the 1960s
- Many artists and designers were 'self-taught' - pretty amazing and talented people
- Poetry - Emotion and unexpected experiences - form of expression
- Photography is manipulated - sense of magic or mystery - never thought of photography like that really
- Produced more possibilities for computer graphics
Posters, place cards and handmade goods because very popular in the late 1960s in Paris
- Design was a way of getting profit
- Universal symbols were used within designs to capture a wider audience
- Mediums for war periods consisted of newspapers, radio and posters mainly
- Graphic Designers worked with governments who had missions
- Posters and brochures for third world organisations and ideological view points
- Conceptual images = very important in the design world

Lecutre 6....Notes

Today in the lesson we spent the entire time doing our metaphor assignment. This was very helpful and I got a lot more done than I thought I would.

For my assignment I'm doing a Mondrian grid, using the primary colours then placing the metaphor pictures and designers within this grid. I 'accidentally' did a metaphor for the grid due to the Mondrian grid being a metaphor for modernism.

We got given a reading for this week but the notes for it will be published in week 7 after I have completed the reading :) 

Lecture 5.....Notes

Today in class we watched a movie called 'Print and Copy'.
We didn't receive a reading for this week therefore there is no notes or reading responses. :)
